What Are The Types Of Take-up Devices For Bucket Elevators?

Mar 04, 2026

The Bucket Elevatortake-up device is mainly used to adjust the traction components of the bucket elevator to maintain a certain tension, preventing slippage, deviation, derailment and other faults due to insufficient traction tension. The commonly used take-up device forms for bucket elevators include gravity tensioning, spring tensioning and screw rod tensioning. What are the characteristics of these three tensioning forms and how are they used? Let me take you to have a detailed understanding.

Gravity-type take-up device

The Chain Bucket Elevator take-up device mainly adopts gravity tensioning. Gravity tensioning mainly utilizes the lever principle, by pressing the weight box against the box plate and pulling the shaft with the weight, to achieve the effect of tensioning the chain.

When the chain is worn or elongated, the tension force can remain unchanged; it has good buffering performance and can reduce chain breakage, chain jumping and other faults. The gravity tensioning structure is relatively complex and occupies a large space.

Spring-type take-up device

Spring Type Take-Up Device

The spring-type take-up device uses the elastic force of the spring to tension the chain or belt. The Belt Bucket Elevator usually uses this tensioning form. If during operation, the spring has been adjusted to the tightest position but the chain is still loose, then the upper and lower nuts of the tensioning need to be adjusted to make the spring re-expand. Secondly, the elastic force of the spring will weaken with the passage of time, and regular maintenance and replacement of the spring are required. The spring-type take-up device has a simple structure and is easy to install.

Screw rod-type take-up device

The screw rod-type take-up device mainly aims to tension the chain by adjusting the nut. This type of take-up device requires a large space and has high requirements for mechanical rotation, and regular maintenance and maintenance are required. If the bucket elevator is not used for a long time or there is severe accumulation of materials at the tail end and is not cleaned, it may cause the tensioning force of the screw rod to be too large, and the upper steel plate of the screw rod may be bent. In addition, if the tensioning of the screw rod is too tight, it may also cause faults. When installing this type of take-up device for the bucket elevator, attention should be paid to these two points.

How To Choose The Right Take-Up Device For Your Bucket Elevator?

 Reviw Of Bucket Elevator Models

For Chain Bucket Elevators, the heavy hammer type take-up device is preferred as it ensures the long-term stable operation of the chain and effectively reduces chain detachment failures;

For Belt Bucket Elevators, the spring type take-up device is preferred as it is easy to install, has a lower cost, and can adapt to the characteristics of the belt, avoiding belt slipping.

 Consider The Operating Conditions

For large equipment with long-term continuous operation and large conveying capacity, the heavy hammer type take-up device should be preferred as it offers stable tension and good buffering performance, ensuring the equipment operates stably for a long time;

For small equipment with limited installation space and moderate conveying capacity, the spring type take-up device should be selected as it is easy to install, has low cost, and does not require complex maintenance;

For those with high requirements for tension adjustment accuracy, and where personnel can be arranged for regular manual maintenance, the screw type take-up device should be chosen as it can precisely control the tension.

 Consider Maintenance Costs And Difficulty

If you don't want frequent maintenance and prefer ease of use, choose the hammer-type take-up device. Its tension can be automatically compensated and does not require frequent manual adjustment;

If your budget is limited and you want easy maintenance, choose the spring-type take-up device. It has fewer components and lower maintenance costs;

If you are willing to perform regular manual maintenance and pursue high adjustment accuracy, choose the screw-type take-up device. Although the maintenance is a bit more cumbersome, the adjustment accuracy is high.

 Check Installation Space

If the installation space is ample, you can choose the hammer-type or screw-type take-up device, and there is no need to worry about space limitations;

If the installation space is limited, the spring-type take-up device should be the first choice. Its structure is compact and it occupies a small area, making it suitable for narrow scenarios.
