The structure of the coal sidewall belt conveyor is that on both sides of the flat rubber transport belt, freely expandable rubber corrugated vertical sidewalls are adhered. Between the sidewalls, cleats with certain strength and elasticity are adhered to form a box-shaped hopper structure. Coal can be continuously transported within the hopper.
- This equipment has a large conveying capacity. Compared with other conveyors, its conveying capacity can be increased by 1.5 to 2 times.
- It has strong versatility. The basic components are the same as those of the general belt conveyor, and it has a wide range of applications. It can convey various loose materials such as crushed stones, limestone, coal, sand and gravel, clay, sintered sand powder, wood chips, grains, etc., with a stacking density of 0.5 - 2.5 t/m³ and a maximum particle size of 100 - 250 mm, and can be transported in an environment of -15℃ to +40℃.
- It also has the advantages of simple structure, convenient maintenance, small floor area, and cost savings. It can replace the combined layout scheme of ordinary conveyors and bucket elevators, and the site layout is flexible.
- The equipment is widely used in industries such as coal, grains, building materials, chemicals, hydropower, metallurgy, etc. If conveying materials with special requirements such as high temperature, acid and alkali, oil-containing or organic solvents, special special-edge conveyor belts need to be selected.
Challenges Facing The Coal Industry
Before the wide application of sidewall belt conveyors, in high-drop transportation scenarios such as in coal mines, coal washing plants, and coal storage elevators, ordinary flat belts, scraper conveyors, bucket elevators, or mine cars were used for transportation. Various problems were extremely prominent:
- Ordinary flat belts allow a maximum inclination angle of only 15° to 18°. If the inclination angle is slightly larger, wet coal and lump coal are prone to sliding and rolling down, causing material to spill all along the line. The coal at the bottom blocking the material flow can also cause the belt to slip, wear abnormally, and even catch fire due to friction. To achieve the same lifting height, it is necessary to lay extremely long belts, which occupies a large amount of factory and underground space and incurs high construction costs;
- Switching to scraper conveyors can transport coal at a large inclination angle, but the entire machine has high energy consumption, and the chains and middle troughs wear severely. Frequent chain breaks, equipment being crushed, and chain flying faults occur. The annual downtime for maintenance is long, and the costs for spare parts replacement and manual maintenance remain high;
- Bucket elevators are prone to coal hopper detachment and material blockage. They have poor adaptability to large pieces of raw coal;
- In open-pit mines and deep well mining, intermittent transportation within the mine is relied upon. The expenses for fuel, labor, and road maintenance are huge. The transportation continuity is poor, vehicles roll down, dust and exhaust pollution are prominent, and safety and environmental protection issues are particularly serious. Moreover, the traditional equipment cannot achieve continuous coal lifting at a large inclination angle or even vertical in a confined space. The layout of the entire conveying system is cumbersome, the transfer efficiency is low, and there is a significant safety hazard of falling coal from a height and causing injuries from falling objects.

How Coal Sidewall Belt Conveyor Work?
Basically, it is the same as an ordinary belt conveyor. The only difference is that it has a corrugated-shaped side wall. Coal in the form of blocks and other shapes enter the conveyor through the loading port, and after moving along the conveyor belt, they reach the discharging port and are discharged. During the entire process, the side wall can play a role in preventing the materials from sliding or falling off.

For vertical conveying conditions, the research suggests that reasonably controlling the belt speed within the range of 0.8 to 1.2 m/s can effectively prevent the phenomenon of material spillage.
